Fortune Shrugged

I was dealt a royal hand
Three queens staring at a lucky man
I bet it all to quench my thirst
But fate served up a mistaken curse

This time around
Fortune shrugged and let me down

I got burned when I tried to pry
Turns out the truth cuts deep and wide
Spinning tales just fanned the flames
I can’t put my finger on who to blame

This time around
Fortune shrugged and let me down
Fortune shrugged and let me down
Fortune shrugged, fortune shrugged

Now I feel like I’m losing a step
It’s hard to keep my palate wet
I’m not asking for anything
I just want to hear the angels sing
But fortune shrugged, fortune shrugged, fortune shrugged

She didn’t have the heart to say goodbye
She was gone in the wink of an eye
Driven out by circumstance
She never gave me second chance

This time around
Fortune shrugged and let me down
Fortune shrugged and let me down
Fortune shrugged, fortune shrugged, fortune shrugged

Clock Tick in Reverse

You were laughing at the camera
And I was mugging up the shot
Who knew I was about to get stung
In those days even I was young

The scent of life was everywhere
I got drunk just breathing the air
Then I woke to the deafening sound
Of a gavel that came banging down

I know it’s not right
I know it’s perverse
To want the clock to tick in reverse

I long for the old neighborhood
I’d lumber back if I could
But there’s such a heavy load
Going the wrong way down the one-way road

I know it’s not right
I know it’s perverse
To want the clock to tick in reverse

Oh I’m not getting too far
Lying around alone in wait
Maybe I’ll make a run
Maybe it’s just too late

Now I’m sitting in the Gem Café
It once had another name
The waitress doesn’t know who I am
The candle on the table won’t hold a flame

I know it’s not right
I know it’s perverse
To want the clock to tick in reverse

Ain’t No Joke

Is it a losing game
Is it a crying shame
Singing to a saint in rhymes
A humbled voice on borrowed time
Oh no, oh no
In the end
It’s no sin
To turn around and start again

I’m praying
Calling out in hope
I’m praying
But the words stick in my throat
Oh, this ain’t no joke

There is no excuse
You can’t light a fuse
Put out by passing storms
Spitting hail like tiny thorns
Oh no, oh no
Your broken crown
Lies on the ground
It should be at the lost and found

I’m praying
Calling out in hope
I’m praying
But the words stick in my throat
Oh, this ain’t no joke

Tall tales grew too long
Someone got a few things wrong
Was a time I had the knack
Of binding things before they cracked
Oh no, oh no
Come on home
I’ll fix your throne
No one wants to be alone

I’m praying
Calling out in hope
I’m praying
But the words stick in my throat
Oh, this ain’t no joke

Oh, this ain’t no joke

No Matter What Goes Down

I can spot you in a crowd
If you get lost you don’t have to shout
You don’t have to be so strong
I’ll lend a hand to right a wrong

I’m here for you
I’ll always be around
We’re on solid ground
No matter what goes down

You don’t need to hide the truth
Fearing I’ll think less of you
It’s okay to take a fall
Love’s not a game of winner-take-all

I’m here for you
I’ll always be around
We’re on solid ground
No matter what goes down

I don’t really understand
When they say there’s a master plan
But I know when the clock does slow
I’ll be holding your hand

I’ll laugh at your little quirks
Wipe your tears when something hurts
Lighten up the darkest days
Hold you when you feel afraid

I’m here for you
I’ll always be around
We’re on solid ground
No matter what goes down
I’ll always be around
We’re on solid ground
No matter what goes down

Watch You Soar

Little one you arrived
And swept us off our feet
May your stride be strong and wide
Leave a mark long and deep
May your heart have a soulful beat

One day you’ll leave
Walk out the door
You’ll climb and stumble
And climb some more
The world is yours to explore
All I want is to watch you soar

Little one may you thrive
Let nothing hold you back
Set your sails the tide will rise
If you take up all the slack
When you get there give some back

One day you’ll leave
Walk out the door
You’ll climb and stumble
And climb some more
The world is yours to explore
All I want is to watch you soar

Little one lift your voice
Rise above the din
May I be there to rejoice
When your ship comes rolling in
When your ship comes rolling in

One day you’ll leave
Walk out the door
You’ll climb and stumble
And climb some more
The world is yours to explore
All I want is to watch you soar

Find the Muse

Chatter fills up my head about things gone awry
But you won’t ever hear it even if you try
I see your beauty when the voices are refused
Stick around I swear I’ll find the muse

Find the muse
Someone help me find the muse
Someone help me find the muse

I got here playing the man that I’m supposed to be
But even in my home I’m a restless refugee
There’s so little time and everything to lose
If I can’t put my hands on the muse

Find the muse
Someone help me find the muse

Some people pray and say they feel heaven’s touch
I kneel down close my eyes but don’t feel too much
I’m the last one to rise from the pew
Still searching for that elusive muse

Find the muse
Someone help me find the muse
Someone help me find the muse

Just when I think that there isn’t any more
A flash of inspiration appears at the door
I make a move before it slips away from view
Maybe this time it’ll be the muse

Find the muse
Find the muse
Someone help me find the muse
Someone help me find the muse

Big Top Down

The big top came down
And I’m the clown
Whose face was wiped off clean
Hawker’s silenced call
Juggler drops the ball
Trapeze swing in the breeze

Don’t they know that the show must always go on
Don’t they know that the show must always go on
The show must go on, the show must go on

The crowds all walked out
Fortune teller is in doubt
Plate spinner wobbles away
The contortionist
Frozen in a twist
The ringmaster has nothing to say

Don’t they know that the show must always go on
Don’t they know that the show must always go on

Faded signs, empty stands
Strongman doesn’t understand
The monkey’s on his back
Lion tamer lost his whip
Acrobat lost his grip
The greatest show on Earth’s not coming back

The big top, the big top’s down, the show must go on
The big top, the big top’s down, the show must go on

The big top came down
Trumpet man makes no sound
Bed of nails rusted flat
Houdini can’t escape
Tightrope wire breaks
Spotlights all go black

Don’t they know that the show must always go on
Don’t they know that the show must always go on

Ooh, the big top, ooh, the big top, ooh, they tore it down
The show must go on
Ooh, the big top, ooh, the big top, ooh, they tore it down
The show must go on

Long Lost Place

Walking along the beach
Your footsteps wash away
Like you don’t want to leave
Even a little trace
The clouds roll in overhead
Your shadow still drags behind each step

I wish you could find that long lost place
Where laughter comes and sadness stays away
That long lost place

Fate seemed to lose its way
You were caught off guard
The prize was in your hands
But things turned out to be hard
Now you don’t even try
To find what’s locked up inside

I wish you could find that long lost place
Where laughter comes and sadness stays away
That long lost place

I don’t want to be in your film noir
Don’t want to share another scar
I don’t know what’s in the way
My world’s in color
Yours is set in gray

Now you don’t even try
To find what’s locked up deep inside

I wish you could find that long lost place
Where laughter comes and sadness stays away
That long lost place
I hope you find it someday
That long lost place
I hope you find it someday
That long lost place
I hope you find it someday
That long lost place
That long lost place

I’m Gonna Crack

My shoes have holes in the soles
From running after a pot of gold
I was chasing everything but you
Came home to nothing but an empty room

Take me back or I’m gonna crack

So many warning signs I didn’t heed
All my senses kept failing me
Oh I listened but didn’t hear
And I looked but couldn’t see things clear

Take me back or I’m gonna crack
Take me back or I’m gonna crack

I poured the spirits down the drain
They barely put a dent in the pain
Now I’m clean if you don’t look too close
There’s more to hold since I bled the ghost

Take me back or I’m gonna crack
Take me back or I’m gonna crack

Somehow I lost the magic touch
Holding on and not feeling clutched
I didn’t notice the chill arrive
I was talking with my tongue tied

Take me back or I’m gonna crack
Take me back or I’m gonna crack
Take me back or I’m gonna crack

Broke Down Cadillac

She said my grin and chiseled chin
Caught her eye and drew her in
But now she whines
My grill don’t shine

She cut me loose, got the last word
Then I blew a tire jumping a curb
I pulled my hair
Cause I don’t have a spare

She threw the roses, I turned my back
Ran to the car, found the windshield cracked
Oh my God better face the fact
My new home is a broke down Cadillac

She said I jerked her strings like a marionette
But she’s no doll and nobody’s pet
To stay with me
Hell would have to freeze

She’s not hopping back on board
I’m stuck in a ditch with the pedal floored
Honking the horn
Riding out the storm

She threw the roses, I turned my back
Ran to the car, found the windshield cracked
Oh my God better face the fact
My new home is a broke down Cadillac

Bang bang boom, the tire blew
Bang bang boom, yeah it’s true

She threw the roses, I turned my back
Ran to the car, found the windshield cracked
Oh my God better face the fact
My new home, my new home, my new home
Is a broke down Cadillac

Bang bang boom, the tire blew
Bang bang boom, I got my due
Bang bang boom, yeah it’s true
Bang bang boom

Empty Space

I know it won’t ever be the same
Since the night I called but an answer never came
It’s so hard to know which way to aim
When you’re cut right down to a cold blank slate
When the future fades into a murky shape

I thought there’d be a bitter taste
I thought the world would surely be erased
But your love always fills the empty space

Somehow you’re here with me wherever I go
In the paths I take, in the sand between my toes
In the footprints worn on the steps to our home
In the fading scent still clinging to your clothes
In all the nights that fell and days that rose

I thought there’d be a bitter taste
I thought the world would surely be erased
But your love always fills the empty space

You sneak back around in many ways
You’re there in my voice when I turn a phrase
You’re stuck in my mind when I lay awake
And in the pangs that grip when it’s you I crave
And in the chipped wine glass I raise

I thought there’d be a bitter taste
I thought the world would surely be erased
But your love always fills the empty space
The empty space
The empty space

Blind the Truth

Things are getting tense
Reason’s draining down the hole
Bluster’s blowing helter skelter
Lies are being sold
Cameras on your every move
As you throw away the rules

And blind the truth
Blind the truth

On the bully pulpit
Biting words abuse
Decent people
Flattened by your wing-tipped shoes
You say the news is a nasty ruse
As you flash a wily smile

And blind the truth
You blind the truth
You blind the truth
Blind the truth

Break your promises
Blame the anonymous
So many lost their voice
Shifty tactics
Stir up fanatics
And you’re not the people’s choice
No

Your finger’s pointed
At phantoms crawling under the wall
But they’re just hard working folks
Living here with us all
Got the world in a golden noose
An angle on every deal

That blinds the truth
Blinds the truth
Blinds the truth
Blinds the truth
Blinds the truth
You can’t see us
You don’t hear us
You don’t get it
Blind the truth
